Caltrans recently issued a press release about Director Malcolm Dougherty’s bike ride through downtown Sacramento and West Sacramento. The annual bike ride, which the Caltrans executive team also participated in, highlights the advantages and opportunities for bicycle-focused transportation planning. At this time, Caltrans is drafting the first-ever California State Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan, which will outline efforts to include bicycle and pedestrian considerations in all department policies, programs and projects. The plan will also lead to improved connections between the state’s bicycle and pedestrian’s paths and the network of local and regional roads, public transit and intercity and passenger rail.

Bicycle Safety in California

In May, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) along with many other state, local and national agencies observed Bicycle Safety Awareness Month. Cyclists continue to be one of the more vulnerable roadway user groups. Without the added protection of a steel cage, air bags and a seat belt, they’re truly at the mercy of other motorists on the road. During May, drivers and cyclists were encouraged to be “Roll Models” for their communities, by practicing safe riding and driving habits.

Bicycle Accident Injuries

Bicycle accident injuries can be severe, catastrophic and even fatal for victims. Any time a car connects with a bicycle, no matter how slow or fast it is going, there is the potential for very serious damage. It’s not uncommon for riders to get ejected or thrown from their bikes after initial impact. Even with helmets and other protective gear, riders can become seriously injured. Some of the injuries we typically associate with bicycle accidents are head injuries, traumatic brain injuries (TBI), neck and spinal cord injuries, fractures, abrasions, bruises and lacerations.
