The California Highway Patrol (CHP) has recently issued a press release about their participation in National Distracted Driving Awareness Month. During the month of April, the CHP, the Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) and Impact Teen Drivers (ITD) in addition to other community partners and law enforcement agencies throughout the state will be raising awareness about the dangers and consequences associated with distracted driving. April 3-9, 2017 is California Teen Safe Driver Week, and the CHP will be holding safety presentations at high schools and a variety of venues across the state.

It Can Wait

This year, AT&T is also teaming up with the CHP for their “It Can Wait” initiative. This safety campaign is about reminding teen drivers and other motorists that the text or call can wait. There is no text, call or status update that is worth putting your life and the lives of others in danger for. Teen drivers are at a particularly high risk for engaging in distracted driving behaviors behind the wheel, even though drivers under the age of 18 years old are prohibited from using a cell phone or hands-free device behind the wheel.

Take the Pledge

Safety advocates are calling on drivers to Take the Pledge to never drive distracted. Taking the pledge means you’re acknowledging that distracted driving is never okay. Asking drivers you know to take the pledge is a great way to raise awareness and accountability for roadway safety. Parents are encouraged to take the pledge along with their teen drivers. Pledging to never drive distracted is an important step in improving roadway safety on local roadways and across the nation.

Distracted Driving Accidents in California

In 2015, 3,477 people were killed in crashes involving distracted drivers. An additional 391,000 people were injured in distracted driving crashes. Don’t be a statistic. Put the phone down, and take the pledge.
