The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) recently issued a press release about an event honoring four employees who rescued motorists who were trapped in wreckage after car crashes. The Caltrans employees were given the Governor’s State Employee Medal of Valor Award for their brave and selfless actions. These brave employees put their own safety on the line to help injured and trapped motorists. In both situations, these Caltrans employees jumped into the fast-rushing water to rescue complete strangers who were trapped in their vehicles. Malcolm Dougherty, Caltrans Director, praised these employees as “true heroes.”
Caltrans Employee Rescues Woman in Modoc County
On December 20, 2015, Dean Rouse, a Caltrans Alturas Maintenance Shop Leadworker, jumped into the fast current of the Pit River in Modoc County. He sprang into action when a vehicle slid off of U.S. Highway 395. It landed upside down in the river. He jumped into the fast-moving river and pulled her from the wreckage. He carried her up the steep embankment beside the roadway, and paramedics rushed to the scene and treated her for a heart attack.
Icy Water Caltrans Rescue
On January 29, 2016, Maintenance Equipment Operator II James Anderson responded to a dispatch call about a woman trapped in her vehicle in a quick-flowing creek. Anderson jumped into the icy water to rescue the driver. Her pickup truck overturned in the icy creek, and she was trapped. Anderson’s coworkers, Equipment Operator II Kenneth Myers and Maintenance Supervisor Rodney Walker, helped to keep Anderson from being swept away by the current and assisted in carrying the woman up the steep and slippery embankment to safety.
