The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) just issued a press release about their emergency response to a plane crash on a busy California highway. Recently, a small airplane experienced an engine failure while flying over Orange County, which ended with a crash-landing on Interstate 405. I-405 just happens to be one of the busiest highways in the U.S. Caltrans’ Transportation Management Center swiftly coordinated a rapid response team to deploy detours and to help prevent secondary collisions from happening. The plane caught fire upon landing, and a few vehicles were involved in a collision during the chaos.

Plane Crash Response on I-405

The pilot and a passenger in the small airplane were pulled from the fiery wreckage by an off-duty fire captain. They were both rushed to the hospital for treatment of critical injuries. They have since been released and are expected to make full recoveries. Thanks to the quick response of the Caltrans team, no secondary incidents were reported. Within an hour, they had the wreckage, foam, fuel and other debris cleared from the roadway, so holiday weekend traffic could continue safely.
