The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is currently preparing for their Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over national enforcement mobilization. The 2017 public safety campaign will run from August 16 to September 4. Since Labor Day is traditionally known for its end of summer bashes involving alcohol, this is a time when we typically see a rise in injury causing and fatal crashes associated with drunk driving. According to the NHTSA, drunk driving is one of the deadliest and most often committed crimes. This completely preventable crime has become a deadly epidemic on roadways in California and across the nation.

Increasing Awareness About the Dangers of Drunk Driving

The NHTSA, in addition to various local, state and national public safety agencies and advocates, will be raising awareness about the dangers of drunk driving over the next few weeks. As summer draws to a close, so does the importance of getting the word out about reducing preventable drunk driving crashes. The NHTSA will run paid advertising on a variety of news, print, television and radio outlets. They will also be maximizing their campaign efforts on social media. Raising awareness about this deadly epidemic can help to reduce the number of drunk drivers on the road.

Increasing Law Enforcement Presence

In addition to the educational public safety materials, law enforcement agencies in California and across the nation will be stepping up efforts to deter and catch drunk drivers during the 2017 Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over national mobilization. The campaign will run until Labor Day, September 4, 2017, when a final law enforcement push will be made to keep roadways safe for the holiday weekend. Although Labor Day and many other holiday weekends are typically joyful times for families and friends, they’re not without preventable roadway tragedies. Holiday weekends are well known for having spikes in injury causing and fatal drunk driving crashes.
