The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is currently publicizing their Fourth of July Anti-Drunk Driving Campaign. It’s no secret that the Fourth of July weekend and other popular summer holidays are well known for having a spike in injury causing and fatal drunk-driving crashes. Even with increased law enforcement efforts, the Independence Day holiday weekend is typically a deadly time on roadways in California and across the country. This year, the NHTSA is urging motorists to download the SaferRide mobile app prior to weekend celebrations. The app is designed to help get users a swift, sober and safe ride home. The app is available for Android and Apple devices and helps users identify their location to call a taxi or a friend to come get them.
Fourth of July Weekend Fatal Crash Stats
- Over the 2015 Independence Day holiday weekend, 146 people were killed in crashes involving a driver or motorcycle operator with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08 or higher.
- 92 of those fatalities involved a driver or motorcycle operator with a BAC of .15 or higher, which is almost twice the legal limit.
- During the 2015 Fourth of July holiday weekend, 46 percent of the young drivers killed in crashes were alcohol-impaired.
- The rate of alcohol impairment among drivers involved in fatal crashes during the 2015 Independence Day holiday was over three times higher at night than during the day.
Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over
The California Highway Patrol, as well as many other state and local law enforcement agencies in California and across the nation, will be stepping up their efforts to catch drunk drivers this holiday weekend. If you plan to celebrate with alcohol, make sure you have a safe ride home. Make a plan before the festivities begin, and have a backup plan too, just in case your ride falls through. A backup plan can even be as simple as downloading the SaferRide app or ridesharing app on your phone or pre-programming a cab company’s number into your cell.
