The California Highway Patrol (CHP) recently issued a press release about their enhanced enforcement efforts for the holiday weekend. Since the Labor Day holiday weekend is usually associated with an increase in injury causing and fatal drunk driving crashes, the CHP  stepped up their safety patrols to catch and deter drunk drivers. Beginning at 6:01 p.m. on Friday, September 1, they conducted their Labor Day Maximum Enforcement Period (MEP). During that time, there were additional troopers on various roadways throughout the State of California.

Labor Day Maximum Enforcement Period

While most people will be enjoying backyard barbeques and other festivities with their family members, friends, and loved ones, troopers with the CHP were in full force keeping the roadways safe. The MEP ran until 11:59 p.m. Monday, September 4. Officers with the CHP, as well as drug recognition experts, were in the field and on patrol throughout the holiday weekend.

2016 Labor Day MEP Statistics

  • During the 2016 MEP, 38 people were killed in crashes in the State of California.
  • Roadway fatalities went up 19 percent when compared with the 2015 MEP.
  • During the 2016 Labor Day MEP, more than 1,000 arrests were made for driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
  • During the 2015 Labor Day holiday period, 460 people were killed in crashes nationwide.
  • Nearly a third of those fatal collisions involved drunk drivers.

Labor Day Holiday Weekend Safety

Drunk driving crashes are completely preventable, and everyone deserves to have a safe holiday weekend. The CHP is constantly reminding people to call 9-1-1 if they see a drunk driver. Drunk driving accidents don’t only occur on holiday weekends, they occur all the time.
