The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) recently issued a press release about roadway fatalities at railroad crossings across the state. According to Caltrans, California is leading the nation for deaths at railroad crossings. Between 2015 and 2016, at-grade rail crossing fatalities went up 80 percent in California. Caltrans is calling on motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists to practice safe behavior at railroad crossings throughout the State of California. This week, Caltrans is observing U.S. Rail Safety Week, which runs from September 24-30, 2017.

Operation Lifesaver

Operation Lifesaver, Inc. (OLI) is a national rail safety education group that’s working with the U.S. Department of Transportation to raise awareness about railroad crossing safety during Rail Safety Week. According to OLI, approximately every three hours a person or vehicle is hit by a train in the U.S. OLI has free materials available to roadway users and will be holding various events to get the word out about railway safety this week. Listed below are some important safety tips for roadway users at railway crossings in and around California.

Caltrans’ Railway Safety Tips

  • Trains can’t swerve out of the way.
  • Trains can’t stop swiftly.

  • Never drive around lowered gates.
  • Do not get trapped on the tracks.
  • Do not stay in your vehicle if it stalls on the tracks.

Railroad Crossing Accidents in San Diego

Collisions with trains are often devastating for smaller vehicles. A train can’t stop on a dime, and it can’t swerve to avoid a collision. Even at relatively low speeds, when a train is in the process of coming to a stop, crashes can be catastrophic or even fatal.
