CHP on Senior Driver Safety
Many people are under the misconception that at some arbitrarily chosen age, senior citizens can no longer safely drive. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) has recently issued a press release encouraging safe driving habits for senior drivers. The CHP understands the unique challenges faced by older drivers and encourages the planning of safer driving techniques. Through their program, Age Well, Drive Smart, they aim to assist older drivers and help their families plan for roadway safety though the golden years. Having ‘the talk’ doesn’t necessarily have to mean an end to driving all together, it can be about setting safe limits and talking about the challenges of age-related changes for older drivers.
Age Well, Drive Smart
The Age Well, Drive Smart classes are available to older drivers and their family members. The program has been funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The two-hour class is offered at local CHP officers and senior centers throughout California. These courses provide older drivers with the tools they need for driving safer and staying on the road longer. During the class, seniors will be able to educate themselves, elevate their driving abilities and improve their driving skills.
Looking Forward to Senior Driving Safety
The talk about senior driving safety doesn’t have to revolve around “taking the keys away.” It should start with understanding age-related challenges like deteriorating vision and how to safely address those issues behind the wheel. Physical, cognitive and vision changes can all impact the safety of senior drivers and their fellow motorists, so rather than ignore the issue, confront it and educate yourself.
