CHP’s Efforts to Reduce Impaired Driving Across The State

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) recently issued a press release about their continuing efforts to reduce impaired driving. They’re partnering with the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) on a year-long campaign that has educational and enforcement components in an effort to improve roadway safety across the state. The campaign, entitled “Don’t Drive Impaired,” is going to run until September 30, 2023, and it’s aimed at reducing the number of crashes caused by impaired drivers in California.

According to the CHP, there were 669 people killed and 10,646 people injured in DUI (driving under the influence) crashes in the CHP’s jurisdiction in 2020. Crashes caused by drunk or drugged drivers are preventable, and officials with the CHP want to raise awareness about this very important issue.

Educational Efforts and Enhanced Enforcement in California

The CHP will be able to provide a variety of educational opportunities to motorists throughout the state, as well as having enhanced enforcement efforts, thanks to a grant provided by the OTS. They will be conducting saturation patrols, DUI checkpoints and traffic safety educational efforts throughout the next year. They want to remove drunk drivers from roadways real time and deter drivers from getting behind the wheel if they’re impaired.

In addition to the traditional anti-drinking and driving campaign, they’re also reminding motorists that “DUI Doesn’t Just Mean Alcohol.” Drivers can become impaired from a variety of different legal and illegal substances. Anything that makes you feel different, makes you drive differently. Cannabis, certain over-the-counter meds and even some prescription medications can be dangerous behind the wheel.
