CHP’s Grant to Increase Safety Within Hispanic Communities

The California Highway Patrol recently issued a press release about a grant they’ve received to help increase safety efforts within Hispanic communities across the state. According to the CHP, they will continue to expand their lifesaving Spanish-language traffic safety outreach program to various Hispanic communities in California. The El Protector - Spanish Traffic Education Program (STEP) grant is being provided from the Office of Traffic Safety for a second time.

Of California’s approximately 15.6 million Hispanic residents, more than a quarter speak limited English or only Spanish. That’s why the El Protector program is aimed at bringing vital traffic safety education directly to Hispanic communities. These efforts are all about reducing crashes and saving lives, whether drivers are English speakers or Spanish speakers.

Spanish-Speaking Officers to Provide Educational Events

The CHP will have Spanish-speaking officers sharing traffic safety tips on Spanish media outlets and conducting traffic safety presentations with community partners at a variety of venues throughout the state, such as health fairs, migrant camps, Hispanic and Latino cultural events and at businesses that employ a large number of Spanish-speaking employees.

CHP officers will be raising awareness about issues like seat belts, child safety seats, the dangers of driving under the influence, distracted driving and a variety of other really important traffic safety topics.
