Consumer Alert on Subaru Ascent Fire Risk

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently issued a press release about a Consumer Alert being issued regarding a fire risk for certain model years of Subaru Ascent vehicles. According to the Consumer Alert, anybody that owns one of these vehicles needs to park it outside and not leave it running unattended until it has been repaired.

2019-2022 Subaru Ascents Have an Increased Risk of Fire

Subaru recently issued the recall on select 2019-2022 Subaru Ascents due to this increased risk of fire. At this time, owners are being urged to park their Ascents outside and away from structures. Currently, 271,694 vehicles are being impacted by this recall. Apparently, the positive temperature coefficient heater’s wiring connection may have a production-related defect that can cause a fire while the heater is in operation.

Two Subaru Ascent Fires Reported

According to the press release, there have been two fires associated with this defect reported so far. Thankfully, no injuries or crashes have been reported in association with these fires. 2019-2022 Subaru Ascent owners are being asked to park their vehicles outdoors and away from other vehicles and buildings. Even if your vehicle is turned off, it needs to be parked well away from any structures or other vehicles. Additionally, if you notice any smoke smell coming from the dash or driver’s footwell area, you should stop the vehicle immediately and turn the ignition off.
