Cyclist Killed at El Camino Real and La Costa Ave

CARLSBAD, Calif. – On Sunday, April 21st, 2013, A cyclist was hit by a vehicle when riding in Carlsbad on El Camino Real.

The cyclist, who was riding with a fellow rider, was struck while riding northbound in the bike lane by a vehicle also heading north on El Camino Real just north of La Costa Ave, according to the Carlsbad Police Department. Several people called 911 at about 7:40 a.m. to report the crash.

Those who drove by after the accident noticed that the front windshield of the vehicle was smashed.

The cyclist, who initially was reported unconscious with a head injury, died at the scene, police said.

According to Carlsbad Police, the cyclist’s name is being withheld pending family notification.

The City’s traffic division is conducting an investigation of the accident.
