Fire Department Battalion Chief Injured in Crash

On Saturday morning, a battalion chief with the Santa Barbara Fire Department was injured in a one-car rollover crash on Highway 101 in Gaviota. According to Santa Barbara’s Noozhawk, Robert Mercado was driving home when a rear tire on his Ford Excursion began to delaminate. He reported seeing rubber flying in the rear view mirror prior to losing control of the vehicle and fishtailing in the roadway.

The large vehicle went up a dirt embankment and then overturned. Thankfully, Mercado was wearing his seatbelt. He was trapped, upside down in his seat, but was able to free himself and crawl out of the wreckage. He did suffer from minor injuries, but was reportedly thankful to be walking away from the scene.
