NHTSA 2022 Roadway Fatality Estimates

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently issued a press release about their latest projections for traffic crash fatalities last year. Apparently, early estimates show that 2022 roadway fatalities remain flat after a previous two years of dramatic increases. There were more miles driven and a lower fatality rate in 2022 when compared with 2021.

Traffic Crash Fatalities Decline in 2022

The projections show that an estimated 42,795 people were killed in traffic crashes in 2022. That’s actually a small decrease of about 0.3 Percent when compared with the 42,939 fatalities reported in 2021. The estimated fatality rate actually decreased to 1.35 fatalities per 100 million vehicle miles traveled in 2022. That’s down from 1.37 fatalities per million vehicle miles traveled in 2021. The data also shows that motorists are driving more than they did at the height of the pandemic, which is an almost one-percent increase over 2021.

U.S. Roadway Fatalities Continue to Decline for Third Straight Quarter

They also found that fatalities appeared to decline in the fourth quarter of 2022, which is a big deal, because that is the third straight quarterly decline in fatalities after seven consecutive quarters of increases that started in the third quarter of 2020. Early estimates show that 27 States, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico are all projected to have decreases in fatalities in 2022. In 2021, there were 23 states projected to have increases in roadway fatalities.
