NHTSA Consumer Alert on Fiat Chrysler Automobiles

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently issued a Consumer Alert press release about a “Do Not Drive” warning for certain Fiat Chrysler vehicles that have defective Takata air bags. According to the NHTSA, the automaker has reported more fatalities and injuries associated with the exploding Takata air bags in these vehicles.

Do Not Drive Warning for Certain 2005-2010 Chrysler Dodge Vehicles

The new “Do Not Drive” warning is impacting about 276,000 model year 2005-2010 Dodge Magnums, Chargers and Challengers, as well as MY 2005-2010 Chrysler 300s. Apparently, this warning is coming on the heels of two deaths associated with separate crashes involving 2010 Dodge Chargers, where the Takata driver’s side air bags exploded.

There has also been some additional information coming to light about suspected inflator ruptures in vehicles from other automakers potentially involving exploding Takata air bags. With defective Takata air bags, they can end up exploding in the face of the driver or passenger. The explosion sends shrapnel and metal pieces into the facial and neck region of drivers and passenger occupants. Even crashes at relatively low speeds can cause these air bags to go off and explode, so this is a very serious safety issue.

Check Your Vehicle For Recalls Twice a Year

We’ve been following the Takata air bag recall for years, and the most important thing anybody can do regarding defective auto parts is to check their vehicle for open recalls several times a year. The NHTSA recommends checking twice a year, at the time change.

If your vehicle is under recall, especially if it is involving a “Do Not Drive” warning, you need to schedule your free repair as quickly as possible. Additionally, follow all guidelines or suggestions that are being made by the vehicle’s manufacturer prior to repair. In the case of these vehicles, there is a “Do Not Drive” warning.
