NHTSA Consumer Alert on Recalled Goodyear Tires

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently issued a consumer alert about certain recalled Goodyear tires. According to the press release, the tires being impacted by this recall are primarily used on recreational vehicles (RVs). Although the tires were manufactured between 1996 and 2003, it’s possible that some of these tires are being sold second-hand. Officials with the NHTSA are advising against any aftermarket sales of these tires.

At this time, more than 170,000 tires are associated with this recall. Apparently, these tires have experienced a high rate of failure on RVs when compared to similar tires. The tires in question are G159 in size 275/70R22.5. This is a very common RV tire size. Anybody with an RV with 22.5-inch rims is being encouraged to make sure these tires aren’t on their vehicle.

Defective Goodyear RV Tires

The NHTSA opened a defect investigation based on a claim and complaint data obtained from private litigation. The complaint alleged that Goodyear G159 tires installed on Class A motorhomes failed in service, causing deaths or personal injuries.

If you have these tires, you can contact a Goodyear Commercial Tire and Service Network location or visit an authorized Goodyear commercial truck tire dealer for free replacements. If you haven’t yet put these tires on your RV, Goodyear is offering $500 in exchange for the uninstalled tires.

Recalled Tires Accidents in San Diego

Tire safety is critically important. Anytime tires are recalled, it’s important to get them replaced immediately. If a tire fails, it can lead to a serious injury causing or potentially fatal crash. In addition to checking your RV tires, it’s also a good idea to check your other vehicles’ VINs (Vehicle Identification Numbers) at least twice a year. Recalls can take a while to get initiated, and postcard notifications aren’t always mailed to the correct addresses.
