NHTSA on Fourth of July Roadway Safety

The 4th of July is the quintessential summer holiday. From barbeques and fireworks to picnics and road trips, this is definitely one of the busier holiday weekends. Unfortunately, it’s also one of the more deadly holiday weekends in California and on U.S. roadways. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is currently publicizing their annual 4th of July Anti Drunk Driving campaign.

This year, the NHTSA is calling on people to Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over. In addition to focusing on the dangers and criminal consequences of drunk driving, they’re also talking about how dangerous buzzed driving is. Additionally, they’re running campaigns about drugged driving. If you feel different, you drive different, so whether you’re drinking alcohol or taking certain drugs or medications that impact your safety behind the wheel, make sure to get a safe ride home.

Buzzed Driving is Drunk Driving

The NHTSA wants people to know that buzzed driving is drunk driving. Even one drink can be one drink too many. If you plan on celebrating the 4th of July with any alcohol at all, it’s best to get a safe ride home. Designate a driver, use a ride sharing app or simply call a cab. It’s not worth risking your life or the lives of others.

If You Feel Different, You Drive Different

While most people know that you shouldn’t drive high, not everybody knows that even some legally prescribed and over-the-counter medications can also be dangerous behind the wheel. If you feel different when you take a certain medication or drug, you drive different. If you’re not sure about your meds, ask your doctor or pharmacist. Any type of medication that can impact wakefulness or cognition should not be taken by somebody who plans to get behind the wheel. When in doubt, get a safe ride home.
