NHTSA on Halloween Weekend Driving Safety 2022

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) wants to get the word out about roadway safety this Halloween. Although Halloween falls on a Monday this year, many people in California and throughout the U.S. will be celebrating this coming weekend. Like many holidays, Halloween is known for having a spike in drunk-driving crashes on U.S. roadways. If you plan on celebrating Halloween with alcohol, make sure you have a plan to get home safely.

Additionally, drivers are reminded that there will be children out and about this weekend and also on Halloween night. Some neighborhoods are organizing to do trick-or-treating on Saturday, so children aren’t up late on a school night eating a ton of sweets. Find out when your community plans to trick-or-treat, and make sure to be extra aware of your local roadways when it starts to get dark.

Drive Safely on Halloween

First and foremost, drivers need to be on the lookout for children. Whether communities are deciding to trick-or-treat this weekend or on Monday, be extra vigilant when you’re driving around dusk or after dark. Children might be wearing dark colors as part of their costumes, and you need to expect lots of small pedestrians in residential areas. Drive cautiously, and be on the lookout for kids.

If you plan to party or celebrate Halloween with alcohol, make sure you have a safe ride home. The NHTSA wants people to know that buzzed driving is drunk driving too. Even one drink can be one drink too many, so if you’re drinking alcohol, just don’t risk it.
