NHTSA: Record Increase in Traffic Fatalities in The U.S.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently issued a press release about the initial data showing that there has been a record high increase in fatalities for the first quarter of 2022. The NHTSA just released their early estimates of traffic fatalities for this year, and the numbers are disturbing.

The Early Estimates for First Quarter Traffic Crash Fatalities

According to the NHTSA, there were an estimated 9,560 people killed in traffic crashes on U.S. roadways in the first quarter of this year. That’s a seven-percent increase when compared with last year’s numbers. Last year’s first quarter had 8,935 projected fatalities. This is the highest number of first-quarter fatalities in two decades.

The early estimates show that the rate of first quarter fatalities increased to 1.27 fatalities per 100 million vehicle miles traveled, which is up from the projected rate of 1.25 fatalities per 100 million vehicle miles traveled during the first quarter of 2021.

NHTSA to Look Into Data About Traffic Crash Fatality Rates

Even though these numbers are high nationally, 19 states and Puerto Rico had a decline in traffic deaths during this period. The NHTSA is going to analyze what’s contributing to the increase nationally, and they are also going to look into the decrease in several states to see what’s going right.

In response to the rise in traffic crash fatalities over the past couple of years, the NHTSA has been working to raise awareness about the dangers of speeding, which is one of the most dangerous driving behaviors.

Speeding Wrecks Lives

The Speeding Wrecks Lives Campaign is all about changing attitudes about speeding and reminding drivers of the potentially deadly consequences. It may be tempting to push the speed limit when you’re running late or in a hurry, but it’s never a good idea. It’s not worth risking your life or the lives of others.
