NHTSA Thanksgiving Weekend Safety

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is currently running several different safety campaigns aimed at raising awareness about the dangers associated with the Thanksgiving holiday weekend on U.S. roadways. The NHTSA, as well as many local and state public safety and law enforcement agencies throughout the nation, will be participating in high-visibility enforcement campaigns and public safety campaigns related to buckling up, and driving sober this holiday weekend and throughout the rest of the year.

Thanksgiving Click It or Ticket

You can’t help how other people are driving, but you can buckle up. Buckling up is the single most effective way to protect yourself in the event of a crash. Sadly, there is a huge spike in injury-causing and fatal crashes on U.S. roadways during holiday weekends. Even if you are planning to stay close to home, make sure you buckle up for every trip, every time. It doesn't matter if you’re driving cross-country to visit relatives or across town to visit friends. Buckle up.

Don’t Drive Drunk or Buzzed

A big public safety campaign running during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend is the anti-drunk driving campaign. Crashes caused by drunk driving are completely preventable. If you plan to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday weekend with alcohol, stay home or make a plan to get a safe ride home after the festivities. Don’t wait until the end of the night to make a plan. Put a ridesharing app on your phone or designate a driver. It only takes a few minutes.

Additionally, motorists in California can expect to see law enforcement officers out in full force during the holiday weekend. Buzzed driving is drunk driving too, so if you’ve been drinking at all, don’t get behind the wheel.
