Safety Grants for Vehicle Recall Notification
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently issued a press release about a grant program aimed at helping states inform vehicle owners about open safety recalls. According to the NHTSA, states can now apply for funding to help drivers find out about and repair recalls on their vehicles. The grant program provides $1.5 million for as many as six states to notify consumers of open recalls during vehicle registration.
Registration Recall Pilot Program
In 2017, the NHTSA and the State of Maryland launched a two-year pilot program costing $222,300. This pilot program was designed to provide open recall information to consumers when they registered their new vehicles or renewed a registration. Between April of 2018 and January of 2020, of the 4.6 million vehicle registrations renewed, there were 456,000 vehicles identified as having 943,000 open recalls. Of those, 371,000 individual recalls were repaired. Of those recalls, more than 32 percent involved air bags.
Notifying Motor Vehicle Owners of Recalls
Money from this grant will go towards the notification of motor vehicle owners of open recalls on their vehicles. Participating states will send information about open recalls along with registration notices. The information will include a brief description of the defect, the nature of the recall and information on how to get it fixed. As always, recall repairs are completely free, and motor vehicle owners just need to schedule the repair with their local dealership.
Defective Auto Part Recalls
Unfortunately, only about 60 percent of recalled vehicles are repaired. Consumers are urged to check their vehicles for recalls on a regular basis. Don’t wait for a postcard in the mail that may or may not arrive. Use the NHTSA’s VIN Lookup Tool at least twice a year. Recalls only get initiated when vehicles and auto parts have shown a demonstrated safety hazard that could cause injuries or death to consumers.
