Bike Coalition App for Tracking San Diego Bike Crashes

The San Diego County Bike Coalition and Streets For All (an L.A. based mobility organization) have recently developed an app called the San Diego Crash Tracker. This app reports crashes through an automated Twitter account. According to ABC San Diego News Channel 10, the Twitter account that is operated by the Bike Coalition, and the data comes from the Citizen App, which monitors police scanners and real-time incident reports. The data is tweeted out in rough detail to include locations of the crashes as soon as they happen.

They’ve already run a two-week testing phase of the program, and they found a shockingly high number of pedestrians and cyclists hit by drivers on streets in San Diego. The goal of this app is to bring real-time data to community members and policy makers to help them understand the traffic-related issues that cyclists and pedestrians are facing on San Diego roadways.

Most Injury Causing and Fatal Bicycle Crashes are Preventable

According to ABC San Diego News Channel 10, between 2016 and 2020, an average of more than 240 pedestrians and 80 cyclists were killed or seriously injured each year on San Diego streets. Although San Diego County adopted the Vision Zero plan in 2015, with an aim of reaching zero traffic fatalities by 2025, critics say that they haven’t done enough to make that plan a reality.

Cycling safety advocates are quick to point out that most of these crashes are completely preventable, and other communities have effectively reduced their traffic fatalities and injuries through the implementation of lower speeds and certain types of road safety features.

In addition to increasing the speed at which community members and decision makers learn about crashes, the app also provides data on crashes where no injuries were reported, which are often not tracked by government sources.
