Caltrans $1 Billion for Walking and Biking Projects

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) recently issued a press release about $1 billion being awarded for walking and biking projects in disadvantaged communities across the state. The California Transportation Commission (CTC) just approved $1 billion for 93 new projects focused on walking and biking in disadvantaged communities as part of the 2023 Active Transportation Program.

Of those funds, more than $878 million is being allocated for projects to repair and improve transportation infrastructure throughout the state. That also includes more than $209 million in funding from the federal Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act of 2021 and more than $339 million in funding from Senate Bill (SB) 1, the Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017.

Active Transportation Projects in California

According to Caltrans, two-thirds of the projects being funded will implement safe routes for children to walk or bike to school. This is particularly important in disadvantaged communities, as children are more likely to be walking or biking to school. Projects being funded in Los Angeles include pedestrian and bike safety improvements along Ojai Avenue, from El Roblar Drive through State Route 150 and increased crosswalk visibility and curb extensions in several places.

San Diego projects will include the Sacramento / West Sacramento I Street Bridge deck conversion project, which will help to close an active transportation gap. Additionally, nearly nine miles of protected bike lanes and bicycle paths will be provided in the Coachella Valley Arts and Music area. Finally, the Monterey Bay Sanctuary Scenic Trail Netrock project will provide over four miles of safe bicycle and pedestrian trails with access to 10 schools, one college, 18 parks, 13 public beaches, four libraries, two community centers and numerous senior and affordable housing projects.
