Caltrans’ $34.7 Million Plan for Sustainable Transportation Projects

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) recently issued a press release about the awarding of $34.7 million in state and federal funds related to sustainability in transportation to communities throughout the state. This funding will go toward plans for sustainable transportation projects in various cities, counties, tribes and transit agencies in California.

This funding includes $25 million, funded by Senate Bill (SB) 1, the Road Repair and Accountability act of 2017, which is aimed at planning sustainable transportation projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve the state highway system, enhance access to safe walkways and bike paths and increase natural disaster preparedness.

Caltrans Grant Funding is For Sustainability and Safety

This grant funding isn’t just about sustainability. It’s also about safety. Investing in modern infrastructure for safer forms of active transportation means pedestrians and cyclists can expect safer areas to commute in. Under the Sustainable Communities Competitive and Technical Grants, there’s more than $4.5 million specifically allocated to fund 14 projects to improve safety and access for people who walk and bike.

Caltrans hopes to collaborate with local communities across California to make sure grant funding is spent on issues like equitable transportation infrastructure and safety enhancements for active transportation while also making sure to stick to their climate goals. Many of these projects and plans aren’t just about sustainability and reducing greenhouse gas emission. They’re also geared toward making sure new transportation infrastructure is designed with safety in mind.
