Caltrans to Build Wildlife Overcrossings

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) recently issued a press release about their upcoming plans to build wildlife overcrossings in several areas. Caltrans, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) and Brightline West have entered into an agreement to design and build three wildlife overcrossings across Interstate 15 (I-15) and the future Brightline West high-speed rail system connecting Las Vegas and Southern California.

The overcrossings are going to be designed to provide a sustainable and safe path for wildlife, particularly bighorn sheep, over the existing northbound and southbound highway lanes and the future high-speed rail system to be built within the median. The overcrossings will also help to keep roadways safer, since wild animals will not have to cross through the Interstate.

Three Main Overcrossings in San Bernardino County

There will be three main locations for the wildlife overcrossings in San Bernardino County. They are going to be built near ZzYzx Road, near Mountain Pass and near Rasor Road, spanning the width of I-15, including the Brightline West rail line. In addition to the three wildlife overcrossings, the Brightline West project plans to maintain or improve more than 600 culverts and large-scale crossings under I-15 that already exist. Additionally, the project will restore and install desert tortoise fencing and directional wildlife exclusionary fencing.

Officials with Caltrans hope these overcrossings will help to keep wildlife safe and roadways safe. Making sure wild animals have options to cross major roadways safely is as important to the wildlife as it is to motorist safety.
