Caltrans Unveils New Infrastructure Project Signs
The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) recently issued a press release about the unveiling of their new “Rebuilding CA” highway signs. These signs are meant to highlight the infrastructure projects being funded by unprecedented State and Federal investments. The new highway signs will bring attention to the record-high levels of funding that California is getting to work on roadway projects throughout the state.
According to Caltrans, they had a sign unveiling with local partners for a groundbreaking event on a $36.8 million project. The project this funding is going towards is the replacement of three aging bridges on State Route 99 in Madera County. There is $26 million in funding from the Federal Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) of 2021 and $10 million from Senate Bill (SB) 1, the Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017.
An Estimated $41.9 Billion in Funding for California Projects
Based on formula projections, the IIJA will bring California roadways an estimated $41.9 billion in funding over a five year period. The new signs are the biggest update to hit California highways in six years, and there was reportedly no additional costs associated with the new signs. Caltrans officials don’t plan on replacing current construction signs. The new signs are going to be used on future projects.
Over the last couple of years, the State of California has received nearly $19 billion in federal infrastructure funding. That includes $14 billion in federal transportation funding to update roads, bridges, rail, public transit, airports, electrical vehicle charging network, ports and waterways. These projects have already created over 42,000 jobs for people in California.
