Caltrans Wants NASCAR Fans to “Go Safely”
Last month, the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) and the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) worked together to raise awareness about roadway safety during a NASCAR event. They teamed up with NASCAR Cup Series driver Ross Chastain for a public meet and greet in an effort to encourage California motorists to “Go Safely.” The Go Safely campaign is all about promoting safe driving habits to help reduce the number of injury causing and fatal crashes that occur across the state every year.
CHP and Impact Teen Drivers Take Part in Go Safely Event
Additional partners for the event included the California Highway Patrol (CHP) and Impact Teen Drivers. Topics like the importance of slowing down and making a commitment to distraction-free driving were discussed. Issues like not driving under the influence, being work zone alert, staying safe on rural roads and seat belt safety were also important topics.
People who attended the Go Safely event were encouraged to take a Community Call to Action survey to help share their everyday experiences as motorists. The OTS will use the data collected from the survey to help provide additional resources and improve traffic safety on California roadways.
Protect Your Melon Safety Campaign
Ross Chastain has been partnering with the OTS and Caltrans to promote an important issue- seat belt usage. He’s an eighth-generation watermelon famer, so his safety slogan is “Protect Your Melon.” Additional public safety campaigns he’s involved in are the Go Safely movement and Be Work Zone Alert and Move Over Initiatives.
Raising awareness about roadway safety is an important task, and an estimated more than 4,400 people died in traffic crashes on California roadways last year. On average, that was 12 people every day. Getting the word out about the risks associated with certain driving behaviors is a top priority for Caltrans, the OTS and other public safety agencies.
