CHP and OTS to Motorists Slow Down and Save Lives

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) recently issued a press release about their efforts with the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) to urge motorists to Slow Down and Save Lives over the 4th of July Holiday. The CHP and the OTS have partnered up to get the word out about the elevated risks on roadways over the holiday weekend and week. Not only are law enforcement agencies in California and across the U.S. going to be on the lookout for drunk drivers this weekend, they’re also going to be cracking down on speeding and aggressive driving behaviors.

CHP’s Independence Day Holiday Maximum Enforcement Period

The CHP will be implementing a statewide Maximum Enforcement Period (MEP), which will start at 6:01 p.m. on Friday, June 30, and run until 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday July 4. During this time, CHP officers will be out in full force in an effort to keep roadways safe for motorists. Drivers can expect to see an increase in patrol vehicles throughout the State of California. Safety officials are hoping this will help to deter dangerous driving behaviors and get unsafe drivers off the roads swiftly.

An Increase in Fatalities on California Roadways

According to the CHP, 44 people were killed in motor vehicle crashes in California last year during the Independence Day holiday period. During the CHP’s 78-hour MEP last year, there were nearly 1,000 arrests for driving under the influence. Deterring dangerous driving behaviors and removing drunk drivers from roadways is critically important on holiday weekends, as there is typically an increase in injury-causing and fatal crashes.
