CHP Distributes $12 in Grants to Combat Impaired Driving

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) recently issued a press release announcing that they’re going to award more than $12 million in grant funding to fight Impaired driving. The money will be awarded to 45 California law enforcement agencies, crime laboratories and nonprofit organizations to help address the dangers of drunk driving and drugged driving.

Grant Funding Made Possible With Proposition 64

Proposition 64, the Control, Regulate and Tax Adult Use of Marijuana Act, is tasked with administering grants for educational programs, prevention efforts and enhanced enforcement to help combat impaired driving in communities across the State of California. Grant funding will also be going to crime labs to facilitate forensic toxicology testing. The grant funds for these programs are coming from a tax on the legal growing and selling of cannabis and cannabis products sold in California.

There will also be 30 recipients of law enforcement grants that will help to focus on reducing impaired driving in various communities. Funding will be used to pay for training for law enforcement officers to become drug recognition evaluators. This will help to enhance enforcement regarding drugged driving, while elevating an agency’s ability to properly detect drugged drivers. Finally, there will also be money to pay for public outreach campaigns and community events aimed at raising awareness about the dangers of drunk and drugged driving.
