CHP on School Bus Safety for National School Bus Safety Week

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) recently issued a press release about National School Bus Safety Week. From October 16th through the 20th, the CHP as well as various other public safety agencies, raised awareness about school bus safety. This year, officials with the CHP wanted drivers to know that school bus safety is a two-way street. Professional school bus drivers, as well as other motorists on the roadway, all share responsibility for keeping children safe in California.

School buses are statistically one of the safest ways to get children to and from school. In the State of California, school buses have to meet high standards for design, construction, color and equipment. School bus drivers must also be qualified and properly trained in order to be permitted to transport kids in California.

CHP School Bus Stats

  • On average, there are 65,000 certified school bus drivers in California.
  • They transport more than 1 million students in California each year.
  • Combined, those buses travel about 200 million miles.
  • The CHP is responsible for inspecting California’s more than 22,000 school buses at least once every 13 months.

Stop for School Buses

Officials with the CHP are reminding motorists to stop for school buses. Drivers need to slow down and prepare to stop when they see school bus lights flashing. Drivers must remain stopped until the red lights are off. This is extremely important, because school bus drivers are trained to keep the red lights on until they are certain that children are safely out of the road or seated on the bus.
