CHP’s Grant for Motorcycle Safety and Awareness

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) recently issued a press release about grant funding they are receiving that is going to help improve motorcycle safety in California. The CHP is currently implementing a yearlong, federally grant-funded program called “Get Educated and Ride Safely VI” (GEARS). This program is aimed at raising awareness about motorcycle safety issues and improving safety for motorcycle riders on roadways across the state. The program has an educational component and an enforcement component.

California Motorcycle Crash Data

  • In federal fiscal year 2021-22, there were an estimated 7,639 motorcycle-involved crashes in CHP jurisdiction.
  • These wrecks resulted in 381 deaths and 6,969 injuries.
  • These numbers represented an eight-percent increase from the previous year.

CHP to Increase Motorcycle Safety Activities

During the grant period, officials with the CHP are planning to increase motorcycle safety educational activities across the state. Many of these educational activities will be held in regions with a high volume of motorcycle incidents. They observed National Motorcycle Ride Day on October 14th, and also promoted motorcycle helmet safety during that time.

Enhanced Enforcement to Improve Motorcycle Safety

Grant funds will also go towards enhanced enforcement operations to help improve motorcycle safety. These operations will also target areas with lots of motorcycle-involved crashes. CHP officers will be cracking down on issues like speeding, improper turns and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Motorcycle Accidents in Southern California

Motorcycle riders are still one of the most vulnerable roadway user groups in California and across the U.S. Even with helmets, high-visibility gear and other safety precautions, motorcyclists are at the mercy of the drivers they share the road with. When drivers are distracted or under the influence, they’re not safely sharing the road with other motorists and roadway users.

After any kind of motorcycle accident involving a dangerous or distracted driver, it’s important to speak with a Personal Injury lawyer about your case. You may be entitled to compensation to cover medical bills and other expenses associated with your injuries.
