CHP’s Grant to Amplify Outreach in Latino Communities

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) recently issued a press release about a grant that is going to help boost outreach in Latino communities across the state. This news came last month as many people in California were celebrating Latino Heritage Month. According to the CHP, more than 15 million Latinos call California home, so this latest grant can help to provide more traffic safety outreach programs in Spanish-speaking communities. This year, the CHP’s El Protector program is going to run from October 1, 2023 to September 30, 2024.

CHP’s El Protector Program

The CHP’s El Protector program is reportedly the Department’s longest-standing community outreach program. This program was originally started in 1987 and is all about bringing traffic safety education to the Spanish-speaking community. The goal of the El Protector program is to improve roadway safety by saving lives and reducing the number of crashes on California roadways. If you’re interested in finding out where an El Protector program presentation is going to be or to request one for your community, contact the CHP’s Office of Community Outreach, Marketing and Recruitment.

Traffic Safety Presentations in Latino Communities

The CHP has a variety of traffic safety presentations planned for this year’s El Protector program. They will also be working with community partners at health fairs, migrant and farmworker communities, businesses with a high number of Spanish-speaking employees and Hispanic/Latino cultural events. Topics to boost awareness about will include seat belt usage and child safety restraints, the dangers of impaired and distracted driving, the primary causes of crashes, defensive driving techniques, teen/parent safe driving, driver’s license requirements and other important traffic-safety subjects.
