CHP’s Grant to Enhance Strategies to Combat Speeding
The California Highway Patrol (CHP), recently issued a press release about a grant they’re getting to help enhance strategies to combat speeding and aggressive driving in California. The Speed Prevention, Education and Enforcement Deterrence (SPEED II) program is being funded by a $2.5 million federal grant. The goal of the program is to reduce the number of fatal and injury-causing crashes related to speed and reduce the number of victims killed and injured in these crashes. In addition to an educational component, there will also be enhanced speed enforcement efforts statewide.
Speeding Related Crashes in California by The Numbers
- In federal fiscal year 2021-2022, speed was a factor in nearly 40 percent of all fatal and injury crashes in California.
- During that time period, there were more than 28,000 speed-related crashes.
- Those crashes resulted in over 400 deaths and more than 42,000 injuries.
- From April 2021 to July 2023, CHP officers issued 48,000 citations to motorists exceeding 100 miles per hour.
Getting The Word Out About The Dangers of Speeding
Throughout the following year, the CHP will be working hard to get the word out about the dangers of speeding and driving aggressively. They will be holding educational events and publishing ads on social media. Motorists can also expect to see an increase in enforcement efforts where speeding is concerned. There will be specialized speed enforcement operations on various state routes that have been known to have a high volume of speeding drivers.
