CHP to Tackle Distracted Driving Epidemic

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) recently issued a press release about their upcoming efforts to tackle the epidemic of distracted driving among adult drivers in the state. The statewide campaign “Distracted Driving Education and Enforcement for Adult Drivers” started at the end of September and will run for 12 months. This public safety campaign is being funded by a $350,000 federal grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Education and Enforcement to Reduce Distracted Driving Crashes

The CHP is utilizing a two-pronged approach to the problem of distracted driving on California roadways. In addition to enhancing enforcement operations, there will be a variety of educational events throughout the year. The CHP is planning to conduct at least 90 enforcement operations that will specifically target adult distracted drivers, and there will be 300 adult traffic safety presentations statewide.

The Most Common Forms of Distracted Driving

While there are many different types of distractions behind the wheel, cell phone use remains one of the most common forms. In addition to talking and texting on a cell phone, other common types of distraction include eating, grooming, operating a navigation system and even just adjusting the radio. Anything that takes your attention, hands or eyes off the task of driving is considered a distraction.

Distracted Driving Crash Stats in California

According to the CHP, between 2019 and 2021, there were a total of 6,343 fatal and injury-causing crashes in the CHP jurisdiction involving distracted driving. During that time period, CHP officers also issued more than 200,000 citations to drivers in violation of the California hands free law.

After a Distracted Driving Accident in Southern California
