Consumer Alert: Additional Urgent Warning About Takata Air Bags

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is issuing yet another Consumer Alert about the dangers of Takata air bags. This urgent warning is being issued just after the news of another death involving a ruptured Takata air bag inflator. This one was in a 2006 Ford Ranger that was under a “Do Not Drive” warning.

“Do Not Drive” Warning For Vehicles With Takata Air Bags

This isn’t the only make and model of vehicle that is currently being impacted by a “Do Not Drive” warning associated with defective Takata air bags. When these air bags explode, they can send shrapnel into the neck, face and chest areas of occupants. Older cars are at higher risk, since the age of the air bag is a contributing factor. Hot climates are also a factor, so don’t waste any time if your vehicle is under a “Do Not Drive” warning.

Check to See if Your Vehicle is Under Recall

It’s really important to check your vehicle for open recalls regularly. Although notices are supposed to be sent out in the mail, it’s still really important to check for recalls on the NHTSA's website at least two times a year. The NHTSA has a search engine that only takes a few seconds to use. Recall repairs are totally free too, so don’t put it off.

NHTSA’s VIN Lookup Tool

Using the NHTSA’s search engine to see if your vehicle is under recall is really easy. All you need is your vehicle’s VIN (Vehicle Identification Number). You can find this number on the lower left of your car’s windshield or on your registration card. Type that number into the search tool, and you can see if your vehicle is under recall for any defective or faulty parts. If your vehicle is under recall, follow the instructions from the manufacturer. Call your local dealership, and get your free repair scheduled as soon as possible.
