Consumer Alert on Recalled VW Vehicles
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently issued a press release about a Consumer Alert being announced about a Volkswagen recall. According to the NHTSA, certain model year 2018-2021 VW Atlas and 2020 Atlas Cross Sport vehicles are being recalled due to faulty occupant detection systems in their front passenger seats. At this time, the Consumer Alert is urging owners not to let anyone sit in the front passenger seat until their vehicles get repaired.
Faulty Passenger Occupant Detection System
At this time, the recall is impacting 143,053 vehicles. Apparently, the passenger occupant detection system in these vehicles can experience a fault in the writing, which can deactivate the front passenger air bag. The air bag can actually be deactivated even if there is somebody in the front passenger seat. If an air bag is deactivated, it will not deploy if there is a crash. This issue can post a significant risk of injury or death to an occupant in the front passenger seat.
VW is Developing a Repair for Defective Passenger Occupant Detection System
Currently, there isn’t a repair available for these defective VW vehicles. If you have one of these vehicles, it’s critical that you do not let anybody sit in the front passenger seat until a repair has been developed and completed. Volkswagen is currently working to develop a recall repair for this faulty issue and plans to notify impacted vehicle owners as soon as it is ready.
