Drivers Going Too Fast For Roadway Conditions During Storm

KTLA News Channel Five recently released footage of vehicles traveling at high speeds on the 5 Freeway during Tropical Storm Hilary. Some drivers even lost control of their vehicles and spun out in the roadway, leading to crashes. In the footage, there are cars speeding through the weather. There are cars on the shoulder of the freeway, and one car on the shoulder was actually struck by an out-of-control vehicle.

At the time of the report, there was no word on whether or not anybody was injured in those crashes. We do know that several motorists were driving way too fast for the conditions of the roadways. Some of those drivers may be facing citations.

Driving Too Fast For Conditions

It’s possible to be driving the speed limit and still going too fast. Speeding applies to vehicles that are being driven too fast for roadway and weather conditions too. If it’s a 65 mile-per-hour roadway, and you’re doing 65 miles per hour on a normal day, that’s okay. If it’s a 65 mile-per-hour roadway, and there are torrential downpours impacting visibility and standing water on the road, and you’re going 65 miles per hour, you’re probably speeding.

Drivers have to adjust their speed to the conditions of the roadway. If visibility is poor or roads are slick or full of water, you need to slow down. Pay attention to how fast other people are driving. When in doubt, slow down and proceed cautiously.
