E-Bike Crash Injuries in The U.S.

Recently, a 36-year-old mother of two died in an e-bike crash on the San Juan Capistrano Trail. According to KTLA News Channel Five, she had her two sons on the e-bike when it crashed into rocks beside the trail. Her children were hospitalized and are recovering, but she did not survive her injuries.

This is only the most recent of many e-bikes and electric scooter incidents we’ve seen over the past couple of years. E-bikes and e-scooters have grown in popularity in Southern California and throughout the nation, but they’re not without risks to the riders and other community members.

Electric Bicycle Crashes Often Involve Severe Injuries

Data reported by Reuters Health shows that e-bike crashes have a distinct pattern of severe injuries. Electric bikes are heavier and go faster than traditional bicycles, so predictably, they also carry a higher risk for severe injuries where crashes are concerned.

People who are injured in e-bike crashes are more likely to suffer from internal injuries and have higher rates of concussions than people on regular bicycles. E-bike injuries are also three times more likely to involve a collision with a pedestrian than either scooter or traditional bike injuries.
