Injury Scholarship Recipient Spring 2023

We are proud to announce Isabelle Lim as the winner of our Personal Injury Scholarship this Spring. Our team was moved by Isabelle’s essay of determination towards her academic goals in the midst of recovery from chronic injury.
Isabelle experienced constant problems with her knee starting at age ten. These issues brought not only physical pain, but robbed her of the joy for childhood sports. Over the next 6 years, orthopedic doctors' diagnoses continued to be a sprained knee. The proposed solution to her constant injury was strengthening the muscles around her knee to stabilize the patella.
In 2019 after a sprain, doctors finally sent her to get an MRI. They found that the bone around her patella was not holding it in place. Her cartilage was worn down to the bone, 2 ligaments were loose; the constant wear and tear caused small bone fragments.
Isabelle was recommended for a conditioning program to strengthen her knee, so she joined her school’s cross country team. One month into the season, she felt a sharp pinch and twist in her left knee. Her patella shifted out of place and she fell down. She tried to get up and walk on it but after bearing the slightest weight, it shifted out of place again. She knew this time was different.
In December 2022, Isabelle finally underwent surgery to tighten her ligaments, fix the groove in her patella, re-align the tubercle bone, and recover lost cartilage.
Her injuries have fueled her passion for studying human anatomy. Isabelle has an interest in pursuing physical therapy to help those who were in her position recover from their injuries. To help them regain strength, offer them empathy through medical service, and improve their quality of life.
Isabelle attends San Jose State College with a pre-nursing major.
Congratulations Isabelle!
