Injury Scholarship Winner Spring 2022

We are proud to announce Abigail Mosier as the winner of our Personal Injury Scholarship this Spring. Our team was moved by Abigail’s essay of determination towards her academic goals in the midst of recovery from a life-changing accident.

In April of 2020 during a dance movement improvisation, Mosier felt a pop-like sensation occur in her left hip. Out of force of habit she continued through the routine. A few weeks into collegiate dance training, she realized that this was not a normal pulled or strained muscle.

She was ultimately diagnosed with “acetabular dysplasia of the left hip with degenerative tearing and hypertrophy of the anterior and superior labrum with tearing and hypertrophy of the ligamentum teres…acetabular dysplasia on the right hip with a minimal joint effusion and degeneration of the ligamentum teres…and findings of mild bilateral ischiofemoral impingement.”

Treatment would require a four month rehabilitation process, including two weeks in a brace, four weeks on crutches, and multiple months of no dancing with receiving physical therapy. There were a handful of opportunities that Mosier missed out on that ultimately led her to pivot her passion toward exploring wellness for dancers in areas such as mental health, nutrition, and proper strength training.

She wrote a personal business proposal for The Academy of Athletic Arts, a fitness center and dance studio complex that serves as a pre-professional dance training facility, cross training physical fitness center, and an art industry education establishment that specializes in dance wellness. Mosier will attend postsecondary education to learn the skills necessary to make her business proposal a reality.

Congratulations Abigail!
