National Safety Council on Fatigue While Driving

The National Safety Council (NSC) wants to raise awareness about the dangers of driver fatigue behind the wheel. Although a lack of sleep is almost a badge of honor in some circles, being overtired can be really dangerous for drivers and the motorists they share the road with. Being fatigued actually has similar effects on the body as alcohol impairment. Safety advocates are hoping to get the word out about fatigued driving and increase awareness on the importance of getting a good night’s sleep before getting behind the wheel.

The NSC also has a lot of good tips for employers, since data shows that more than 43 percent of workers are sleep-deprived. People who are most at risk for sleep issues are those that work the night shift, long shifts or irregular shifts.

Drowsy Driving is Impaired Driving

Drowsy driving can be as dangerous as drunk driving. Being tired can have a similar impact on the human body as being impaired. Your reaction times can be diminished. You’re less alert, and you may have reduced cognitive functioning. In some cases, it can even lead to falling asleep behind the wheel.

According to the NSC, you’re three times more likely to be in a car crash if you’re fatigued. Additionally, losing even two hours of sleep is similar to the effect of having three beers. Finally, being awake for more than 20 hours is the equivalent of being legally drunk.
