New Data on L.A. Bicycle Fatalities

A bicycle advocacy group in Los Angeles just released a report with some interesting data. According to KTLA News Channel Five, BikeLA found that the vast majority of fatal crashes involving bicycle riders happen on roads that don’t have dedicated bicycle lanes. In fact, 85 percent of L.A.’s bicycle deaths happened on roads without bicycle lanes. The advocacy group known as BikeLA looked at the 26 fatal bicycle crashes in 2022 to analyze the common factors associated with these fatal wrecks. They found the most common contributing factor for fatal bicycle crashes was a lack of infrastructure dedicated to bicyclists.

Several Factors Involved in Fatal Bicycle Crashes

They found that four main factors were present in a majority of the fatal wrecks. The factors included posted speed limit for vehicles, multiple lanes of traffic, a lack of dedicated bike lanes and poor street lighting. Of the fatal bicycle wrecks analyzed, they found that 81 percent had at least two of those factors, and most of them happened on roads without dedicated bike lanes. The report also found that there is a concentration of fatal bicycle crashes in low-income neighborhoods.

Calling on Improvements for Cyclist Safety in L.A.

BikeLA is calling for better infrastructure and roadway improvements to help keep cyclists safe on roadways in Los Angeles. They would like to see lower speed limits on arterial roadways, converting underutilized vehicle lanes into dedicated bike lanes, upgrading street lighting and improving safety on existing bike lanes.
