NHTSA 2022 5-Star Safety Ratings Announcement

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently issued a press release  about the model year 2022 vehicles that are going to be tested for the 5-Star Safety Ratings program. The NHTSA just announced its list of vehicles that will be tested, and these vehicles represent approximately 86 percent of the new vehicle fleet. Consumers can find the list of vehicles on the NHTSA’s website.

This year’s list includes nine electric vehicles. Testing will also include verification of the performance of various advanced driver assistance systems. The safety ratings program is aimed at helping consumers make informed choices about what vehicles are right for them.

5-Star Safety Ratings

The 5-Star Safety Ratings program tests and rates new vehicles on a variety of different safety issues. The tests look at how well occupants are protected in frontal, side and rollover crashes. Results are analyzed, and vehicles are given a rating on a scale of one to five, with five stars being the highest possible safety rating. These ratings are displayed on the Monroney label or window sticker of new cars for sale.

In addition to the collision safety ratings, a select list of vehicles will also be tested on the performance of advanced driver assistance systems. The tests will evaluate lane departure warning, forward collision warning, crash imminent braking and dynamic brake support.
