NHTSA Announced Penalties Against Automotive Importers

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently issued a press release about the penalties being brought against five different registered automotive industry importers due to violations of various federal safety standards and requirements. The companies involved are Automotive Services Company in Spokane, Washington; Diversified Vehicle Services, Inc. in Indianapolis; Newport International, Inc. in Arlington, Texas; Northern Imports, LLC in Airway Heights, Washington; and VIP Traders, Inc. in Airway Heights, Washington.

The penalties are being brought against these importers, because they were identified as having violated federal requirements by importing vehicles that did not comply with current Federal Motor Safety Standards.

Making Sure Imported Vehicles Meet Safety Standards

American consumers are counting on motor vehicles, both foreign and domestic, to meet all federal safety standards. If those standards aren’t met, vehicles should not be imported into the United States. NHTSA officials are hoping that the news of these penalties sends a clear message to other automotive importers. All vehicles that are imported into the U.S. need to be safe to drive and meet all minimum federal safety standards and requirements.

Safety Violations Made by Automotive Importers

  • Automotive Services Company is facing penalties associated with submitting certifications of conformance signed by unauthorized persons, violations of the mandatory waiting period and failing to report a new location and new facilities used for operations.
