NHTSA Announces $260 Million in Grants for Highway Safety

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently issued a press release announcing the $260 million in grants for highway safety programs being made possible by the bipartisan infrastructure law. The funding from these grants is going to be distrubed to highway safety offices in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, United States territories and the U.S. Department of the Interior's Bureau of Indian Affairs.

Funding will be used to address a variety of traffic safety issues on U.S. roadways and help communities to address traffic safety priorities they’re currently facing. Priorities to be focused on can include anything from occupant protection issues like seat belt education and enforcement all the way to distracted driving prevention programs and motorcycle safety.

Supporting Data-Driven Traffic Safety Programs

Approximately $133.3 million in State and Community Highway Safety Program (Section 402) funds will help to improve highway safety through supporting data-driven traffic safety programs in each particular state. This means that states will be able to target their funding directly to their various communities’ needs. Funds can be used for programs like high-visibility enforcement campaigns, which are frequently used in the State of California, especially during holiday weekends.

The money can also be used for safe driving campaigns and enforcement and education about traffic safety laws that need to be promoted. Funding can also be used to help improve traffic records and support programs that help to ensure parents and caregivers are up-to-date on the proper use of child safety seats and other critically important information.
