NHTSA Consumer Alert Urging Motorists to Report Vehicle Safety Issues

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently issued a consumer alert calling on motorists to report potential vehicle safety issues. In this consumer alert, the NHTSA is urging motorists to file a complaint if they suspect their vehicle may have a safety defect. Most people are familiar with vehicle recalls, but not everybody knows how those get initiated. Recalls can only happen after consumer complaints have been made and investigated.

According to the NHTSA, they administered nearly 900 safety recalls impacting more than 55 million vehicles and other equipment last year. Many of these essential recalls started out as complaints from the general public. The NHTSA looked into the complaints and conducted investigations to get to the bottom of these safety issues.

The NHTSA is also reminding vehicle owners to check their rides for recalls at least twice a year. A good time to remember to check your vehicle for a recall is during daylight saving time changes in the spring and fall. Don’t wait for a postcard to come in the mail. The best way to determine if your vehicle is under recall is to be proactive. Check the NHTSA’s quick and easy Recall Lookup Tool. It only takes a few minutes.

If your vehicle is under recall, follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Some vehicles may be okay to drive until they’re fixed. In some situations, safety defects might be so dangerous you shouldn’t even get behind the wheel until they’re repaired. Thankfully, recall repairs are free. Just contact your local dealership to schedule a free repair.
