NHTSA Gearing Up For National Drive Sober Mobilization

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is gearing up for their national Drive Sober mobilization. From August 16th to September 4th, the NHTSA and various public safety agencies will be participating in the national “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign. This is the final push for anti-drunk driving summer campaigns before the season wraps up on Labor Day. Labor Day is well known as being the last blowout holiday of the summer, and there is often a spike in injury causing and fatal car crashes caused by drunk driving.

Labor Day Drunk Driving Crashes by The Numbers

  • During the 2021 Labor Day holiday period (6:00 p.m. September 3-5:59 a.m. September 7), there were 531 crash deaths in the U.S.
  • Of those crash fatalities, 41 percent involved a drunk driver.
  • More than a quarter (27 percent) of those drivers had a BAC almost twice the legal limit (.15+ BAC).
  • Among drivers between the ages of 18 and 34 who were killed in crashes over the Labor Day holiday period in 2021, 46 percent of those drivers were drunk, with BACs of .08 or higher.
  • Historically, summer months are one of the most dangerous times of the year on U.S. roadways.
  • In August of 2021, drunk driving accounted for 31 percent of all traffic crash deaths.

Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over

Law enforcement agencies in California and throughout the U.S. will be enhancing enforcement efforts for the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign. This year’s campaign is focused on two missions. First, they want to spread the message about the consequences of drunk driving, and second, they want to increase enforcement to catch and deter drunk drivers. There will be public awareness announcements on various outlets including social media, television and radio.
