NHTSA Gearing Up For Vehicle Safety Recall Week

In 2022, there were more than 1,050 safety recalls impacting more than 31 million vehicles and other motor vehicle related equipment in the U.S. With the upcoming time change, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is publicizing their semi-annual vehicle recall awareness campaign. Officials with the NHTSA want motorists to check their vehicles for open recalls twice a year.

While most people may think that they don’t have to worry about recalls unless they get a letter or postcard in the mail, that’s just not the case. Changes of ownership, changes of address and a variety of other issues can impact how quickly people learn about recalls. A great way to remember that you need to check your vehicle for recalls is to do it when the time changes in the spring and in the fall. This will mean that you’re checking your vehicle twice a year.

Vehicle Safety Recalls Week

Vehicle Safety Recalls Week will run from March 4th through the 10th, and it coincides with Daylight Saving Time. During this week, officials with the NHTSA and other safety organizations will be working to get the word out about checking your vehicle for recalls. When Daylight Saving Time ends in November, it’s also a good time to check your vehicle for recalls.

Checking for recalls is really simple. All you need is your vehicle’s VIN or Vehicle Identification Number. You can find this on the lower left area of your windshield or on your vehicle’s registration card. Pop that 17-digit number into the NHTSA’s VIN Lookup Tool and see if your vehicle is being impacted by any recalls.

What To Do If Your Car is Being Recalled

If your vehicle is under recall, read the information from the manufacturer and follow all directions closely. Contact your local dealership to schedule a free repair. If your vehicle has special instructions, like “park outside” or “do not drive,” make sure to follow those instructions.
