NHTSA on 2021 Halloween Roadway Safety

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is urging motorists to make good decisions this Halloween weekend. This year, they’re teaming up with local officials across the nation to let people know that Buzzed Driving is Drunk Driving. Drivers in California can also expect to see an increase in law enforcement efforts aimed at keeping roads safe.

Unfortunately, as with many popular holiday weekends, Halloween is well known for having a spike in injury causing and fatal drunk-driving crashes. Even one drink can be one drink too many in certain circumstances. If you plan to celebrate Halloween with alcohol or drugs, don’t get behind the wheel. It’s not worth risking your life or the lives of others.

Halloween Drunk Driving Crash Facts

  • During Halloween night during the years 2015-2019, there were 126 people killed in drunk-driving crashes nationwide.
  • Of those fatalities, 41 percent occurred in crashes where there was at least one drunk driver involved.
  • During Halloween night 2019, there were 21 vehicle occupants and four pedestrians killed in drunk-driving crashes.
  • Adults between the ages of 21 and 34 had the highest percentage (62 percent) of fatalities in drunk-driving crashes on Halloween night in 2019.

Celebrate Halloween Safely With a Plan

The best way to celebrate Halloween safely is to make a plan ahead of time. If you plan to celebrate with alcohol, line up a ride home before you need one. This can be as simple as designating a driver or planning to use a ridesharing app at the end of the night. Don’t wait til the last minute to try to line up a ride. If you plan ahead of time, getting home can be safe and easy. Even if you do have a committed designated driver, it never hurts to have a backup plan. Whatever you do, don’t get behind the wheel if you’ve been drinking.
